So, hopefully you had bigger plans than just staying in and watching movies on Halloween night, unlike this FF blogger. But, a night of being comfy and enjoying a bowl of popcorn on the couch did allow me to realize one thing, you really can find fashion inspiration anywhere. And, if the Grey Ant line of fashion forward high waist jeans was inspired by Jamie Lee Curtis's character in Halloween, then why not look for style inspiration in our favorite scary movies?

Movie 1: Nightmare on Elm Street. 1984
Not only does the first Nightmare on Elm street feature a young Johnny Depp, but it also features classic preppy looks. Think oxford shirts, sweater vests, chinos, and natural makeup palettes.

Movie 2: Rosemary's Baby 1968
A classic. Especially when talking about hair. Who can forget that great Vidal Sassoon cut?
The movie also features great mod styles. Think clunky shoes and babydoll dresses.

Claire Hummel moved to San Francisco after receiving her degree in Metalsmithing and Jewelry design from the University of Kansas in 2005. In addition to her passion for jewelry she has since become involved in Vintage light restoration. She currently works as a mold maker and sculptor for a artist in the bay area. Her work is created by combining both modern and antiquated elements of design. She is captivated by anything timeworn.

An Inside Look at Moon Pony

Moon Pony is Jenna Feldman from Oakland, California. Jenna, who was a co-founder of Rock Paper Scissors arts collective in Oakland, has been crafting since 2003 and is now a hairstylist at Peter Thomas Hair in Berkeley. Inspired by 1930's hairstyle design books, lack of awesome head pieces, and fashion inspiration kaila "Coco" Chanel, Moon Pony whipped together a flower headband/ headpiece to wear to a friends wedding which was "garden party" themed.

From there Moon Pony has flourished with hair accessory designs. Tulle and feathers, flowers, leather feathers, ribbons and gems have all crossed paths to inspire Moon Pony in her quest of pretty hair wear. Moon Pony has also started a simple line of reconstructed and handmade dresses and tops! This line uses recycled fabrics and new fabrics to create easy to wear, pretty pieces with an earthy feel.

Artist and Minnesota native Lea Mckenny Willcox has been living and working in the Bay Area for the last five years. A designer, sculptor and photographer, Lea recently completed a series of headdresses made of dried foods, flowers, fabric and found objects.

She created the crowns that will be worn with Abi McCannon's couture line in Pretty Penny's up coming fashion show. Head over to the Pretty Penny on October 25th. Reception with drinks and music starts at 7:00, show starts at 8:30.

Designer Profile: Who is bennykelly?

bennykelly is a clothing line created by designer Kelly Holbrook to recapture that magical play we all need from our little child within. Kelly wants people to see that even when you are grown you can still incorporate the little necessities-like a funny picture or an interactive outfit-that make us excited even for just a split moment.

With bennykelly, Kelly combines simple classic apparel design, for both men women, with post abstract graffiti expressionalism (i.e. stencils and screens of a limited run). Every garment created is piece dyed and handmade, giving each a truly unique one-of-a-kind look. Kelly has also pushed to incorporate the overall guide of sustainability when producing our garments. This is one of the reason bennykelly runs such a limited series of most designs, the limitation of recycled or reused supplies.

Recently bennykelly has launched an infant toddler line to bring friends child-friendly designs that are not only sustainable, but avoid the cutesy-wutesy designs found at most children's boutiques.

We've spotted beautiful red lips and pretty, pale skin popping up everywhere this fall.

Ranging in color from siren red to berry pink, the key to this season's look is a matte finish for the lips, leaving the rest of your makeup simple and minimalist.

Skip the blush, make sure your eyebrows are defined but not too dark, and stick with minimal liner and mascara.

To go with our theme of fall skirt styles, our fashion find of the week is this pretty black pencil skirt we recently found at Pretty Penny. Vintage is a great resource when looking for this retro style.

Although it's basic black, the ribbing detail in the satin fabric keeps this skirt far from blah. Perfect to go with the red lips and dewey skin that is popping up everywhere this season (stay tuned next week for more on this emerging beauty trend). This week we're going to bring you a fashion trend that we're a little apprehensive about: Plaid.

Yes, the 90's are back with a vengeance, and stars that can barely remember melancholy days listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam are sporting the grunge.

Fashion Forward is having a little trouble seeing how this sloppy style is going to fit in with fall and spring's tailored looks. We'll have to wait and see if this look is here to stay, or will disappear like pogs.

The Fall season brings great fashion, and of course a season of new tv shows and new episodes of old favorites. This season promises to be a good one, even for those of us without cable. With shows like Gossip Girl, 90210, and Stylista, be prepared for an onslaught of style.

Since its on air debut Gossip Girl has been a show to watch for fashion inspiration and this season promises to bring more fabulous looks to the small screen. The prep school look is big this season and easy to emulate, who doesn't like to layer sweater vests and blazers when the weather turns colder?

And, while this blogger may be more of a fan of the original 90210 90's fashions of ditsy floral print dresses and cropped jean jackets, the new 90210 offers up a view into what is hot in the L.A. fashion scene.

Project Runway Season 5: Episode 7

The Challenge

To create an outfit from car parts.

The Drama

This week was tame in comparison to episodes of late. Our little Blayne has gotten a bit more subdued and serious, though this week Tim did became Timliscious. Suede again talked about dead relatives, though this time none appeared to him while he was sewing. Teri talked some trash and said Korto's look was like "Jeepers Creeper and you better run for cover if he comes at you." Keith whined, as usual, and we found out Stella has a boyfriend named Rat Bone. Seriously.

The Outfits

This week most of the outfits were pretty solid and really showcased some of the designers' talent. Korto wove an entire jacket from seat belts and showed her skill and ingenuity. Stella grommeted, as usual, while constructing a lace-up vest. She tried to break out of her comfort zone by making an awkward pencil skirt from seat belts, but it ended up landing her in the bottom two. She promised it was going to look like Planet of the Apes but it was mostly just awkward and unflattering.

The Winner

Leanne is FF's guess for the winner of this season. She always makes amazing shapes and is a genius at constructing outfits that are interesting and chic. And she's just so sweet and nice!

The Loser

Finally whinny Keith is out. After trying to make excuses and blame the judges for stifling his creativity and his model for ripping his outfit, everyone finally had enough. This boring number has zero creativity and was poorly executed. I really won't miss hearing him complain every episode.

While yesterday we shared a guy's opinion that this Fall fashion trend was a little pointless, we can't help but love this ultra-girly look.

While we may think we look amazing in the hottest trend, it's an undeniable fact that part of the reason we try so hard to look this good is to please the boys. So, to find out what they really think of our fashionable selves we've asked a man near and dear to our hearts what he really thinks of Fall's top trends.

The Blazer

This fall classic was a real winner with our guy. He liked that it made her look like an independent business woman - very sexy! The rest of the outfit, however, really determined how successful the look was. Pair it with a fitted pair of trousers and jeans with a simple top for a winning look.

The Full-Skirted Mini

"Ugh, ugly. She looks like a ballerina." Obviously not a winning look for the guys. He felt it covered up the curves that define a woman's body and looked like a "puffy bag." Not a wearable look for everyday. Sorry ladies, you might want to re-think this flirty fall number and opt for a sexy pencil skirt instead.

Our guy had a little trouble seeing the point in all those ruffles - is it really a bib in disguise? Much like the full-skirted mini, he didn't like how the ruffles detracted from a woman's figure and would have preferred a simpler line.

Don't despair ladies - not all of Fall's trends were rejected by our guy. Floral and printed patterns were a real hit. Truly feminine, he liked how bright and girly fall's florals looked. Very fun and pretty!

Wow, this week was full of drama, which is only appropriate considering we're talking about drag queens here. One (Hedda Lettuce) accused Suede of being lazy for not making sleeves on her outfit, and Suede, once again crumbled under attack. What happened to confident Suede of yore? Blayne, once again, called everything -liscious, as in "If I was a drag queen I'd be neonliscious," which in turn, led Leanne to respond, "If I hear that word one more time I'm gonna barf, and I guess it'll be barfaliscious."

Jerell promised to sell his outfit "like [he] was selling vacuums door to door," everyone talked shit about Keith's outfit and called it a "wookie onesie," and really everyone just got a little wacky this episode with Joe dancing in a drag queen's bra and Suede hallucinating and talking to his dead grandfather while he sewed. Hmm....

"Did a dingo eat your baby, too?"; or, the outfits

Cause I'm lazy this week, I'm only going to show you three outfits (you can see all of them on the Project Runway site), but here are some of the highlights of the judges comments:

On Keith: when he tried to defend his wookie gear, guest judge RuPaul cut him off and asked, "Did a dingo eat your baby, too?" The outfit was also referred to as a sad molting chicken. Keith ended up in the bottom two, but stayed safe. We predict he'll be gone next round.

On Jerell: his not-drag-enough sequin number was called "a good Bar Mitzvah moment."

The Winner

Although I want to hate him, Joe has consistently turned out some great outfits and is one of the few designers who really follows instructions. This pink sailor number has a strategically placed belt to "hide the treasure."

The Loser

Finally, snively Daniel is out for this normal looking number. When asked why he didn't use sequins or go more glam he said he thought sequins would be too gaudy. I guess his "taste level" was finally a detriment. Does anyone else think he's on drugs?

The best of the worst

Tim said this outfit looked like a pterodactyl out of a gay Jurassic Park. And on the catwalk one wing drooped, adding a lopsided air to the look. And of course, it has Blayne's signature neon pink touch. Very neonliscious.

Project Runway Season 5: Episode 5

The Challenge

To design an outfit for a power woman to be worn by day and night by Brooke Shields in next seasons Lipstick Jungle. (Does anyone else adore her eyebrows?)

"I don't know what he's packing, balls or a va-jay-jay..."; or, the weekly drama

And again, I must bite my tongue for lamenting the lack of drama in the beginning of the season. The shit really hit the fan with this episode, my friends. Being forced to work in pairs really brought out the best and the worst in these designers in surprising ways.

Jerell and Stella turned out to be a match made in heaven, with Jerell praising Stella's grommiting skills and Stella being surprisingly quiet (except for her ever-present hammer. Can she finish an episode without hammering something?)

Joe whined to Tim that the outfit he was creating with Korto was poofy, and Korto almost slapped him for not telling him sooner.

Daniel made a mess of Kelli's skirt and Terri questioned Suede's manhood as he struggled with her drapey shirt. And dear Suede, usually so confident, curled up like a little snail and suffered Terri's wrath in silence. And Kelli, usually such a hard-ass gave us some sob story about her disabled grandma and not getting enough love and attention at home (sorry for those of you with disabled grandmas. I love grandmas, I swear!).

"It's looks like a woman who got dressed without a mirror"; or, the outfits

The Best

Jerell and Stella paired up to make this modern take on business wear. While we think it's a little busy, the outfit has an awesome silhouette and we love the high-waisted effect created by the leather belt.

Keith finally created a winner this week and with Kenley's help was able to refine his usually somewhat abstract style. While still maintaining his fascination with texture, Keith added a pop of color that was missing from some of his earlier looks. Again, we love the high waist and the loose top, but aren't really loving the amount of ruffle on the skirt (but since fall is going to be all ruffle, I guess we should get used to it).

The Worst

Kelli and Daniel were not a winning combination on this look. Kelli's over the top style ("I immediately thought, a great leopard print") and Daniel's sloppiness merged to create a slutty mess. With an ill-fitting bodice that looked like something from Frederick's of Hollywood and a trashy color combo, this look had the judges questioning both Daniel and Kelli's taste. And when Daniel defended himself by saying he had impeccable taste, Kenley burst out laughing uncontrollably.Blayne and Leanne worked together on this shorts ensemble that just barely missed the mark. Too casual and ill-focused, Heidi claimed it was the look of someone who got dressed without a mirror. While we agree it wasn't one of the best looks, we thought it wasn't as bad as the judges made it out to be.

The Results

Kelli's poor taste lead to her elimination though we felt Daniel was the real loser. Whinny and lacking in basic skills (did you see the skirt he made! I could practically sew better than that and I can barely thread a needle!) we hope he's out next week.

And the winner was Keith and Kenley's sophisticated ruffle look. While we liked the silhouette of Jerell and Stella's look better, the color choices were better on Keith's design and was overall a more put-together look.

Project Runway Season 5: Episode 4

The Challenge
To design an outfit for the USA olympic team for the opening ceremonies

Meshugana; or, the weekly drama

I bitched about no drama last week, well honey, we had ourselves some drama this week. Ol' Joe, who should be guzzling light beer while watching football instead of designing clothes bitched out Daniel for "re-threading his machine." Everyone got mad at Kenley for insanely giggling and practically throwing herself at Daniel. Jerell accused Blayne of looking "tanorexic" after his tanning fast, and it's all "totally wackadoodle," according to Suede. Fabric was stolen, dirty looks were exchanged, and Blayne cried for his missing booth.

"She has the sweatshop hidden under her table"; or, the outfits

The bottom line is, almost no one made an outfit that looked remotely sporty or would look good on an athlete because, as guest judge Apollo (that sexy speed skater with the dorky but wicked looking goatee) says, these are muscular women.

The best:

Terri's look, according to Jennifer, looked like it came from the sweatshop hidden under her table. Complete with blazer, scarf, tube top and pants, the look was classy, patriotic, and would actually look good on an athlete.

Korto's look was also simple and classy, but also showcased her genius with fabrics. Using lightweight leather for the vest added interest while the linen pants were both breezy and practical and also added texture to the outfit.

Beer guzzling Joe actually had a top three look this week with this sporty number. While it felt a little dated (yes, that is a skort!), it followed the expectations of the challenge the best.

The Worst

As the judges said, if your sport was drinking this would be the perfect outfit. This purple (it was supposed to be blue) cocktail dress landed Daniel in the bottom two. Definitely not appropriate for the Olympics.

This hideous number by Jennifer gives retro a bad name. I really have nothing to say about it.

The Results

We said goodbye to Jennifer and gave Korto the prize.

"It looks like Mary had a little lamb"; or, the best of the worst

As Nina Garcia said, it looks like Mary had a little lamb on this one. Do I even have to describe how awesomely bad this outfit is? And does anyone else think Jerell's model looks wackadoodle?

Fashion Trend of the Week

As a new feature of Fashion Forward, we're going to introduce you to one new trend a week to keep you on your fashion toes. This introductory week, however, we're going to start out a little differently and caution you against this new fashion trend.

According to one of our favorite trend watching sites, WhoWhatWearDaily.com, hair bows, a la turn-of-the-century (and not this century!) little girls is the new look to covet for the end of the summer.

All we can say is ick. Yes, sometimes it's nice to channel looks from our childhood, but what self-respecting woman wants to look like a pre-pubescent girl? Maybe we're just frightened by bows in general, but what comes to mind are bridesmaid dresses gone wrong and and baby dolls (and not the cute dresses, but the toys).

We'd love to know what you think. Post a comment with your opinion: Will you be sporting a perky bow on your summer locks, or will you avoid this juvenile trend like the plague?

Maribel has been on Lakeshore since 2005 providing us with designer items at a fraction of the cost. They're a high end consignment shop and they really take care with items they take in. Friday Fashion Find

Here at Fashion Forward we occasionally find something so great we just have to share. This Friday, as a last hurrah to summer, we bring you these adorable sandals we discovered at Sway.

With brightly colored bands and just a hint of a wedge, these shoes are great for dressing up or down. Wear them with your high-waisted shorts and a brightly colored blouse for a summery look. Or pair them with a pretty dress for something a little fancier. They were the perfect accompaniment to a flowery silk skirt I wore to an outdoor wedding a few weeks ago.

Project Runway Season 5: Episode 3

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that this season's contestants are a little blah?

Sure, we have crazy tanning-obsessed Blayne who has to incorporate a neon touch to every hideous dress and stares at other contestants while saying he's going to eat them (is he going to whip out pinking shears next and stab someone?).

And crazy rocker Stella who makes really hideous clothes and whines all the time. And Suede who refers to himself always in the 3rd person.

But as for the good designers? It's kind of hard to tell them apart this early in the game. And no one has really wowed me yet.

Last night's competition was to take pictures of New York at night to inspire an evening look. As challenges go, it was kind of boring. Maybe I was just feeling hard to impress. Some inspirations were the Chrysler Building, a black fire hydrant for a Mad Max feel, graffiti, and the lights of Times Square.

My favorite look of the night? A beautiful black cocktail dress from Leanne, one of last week's bottom two. Inspired by the black grates around the base of a tree, the dress was structural and beautiful without being too complicated. I would wear it in a heartbeat.

The worst look of the night? A hideous shapeless mass by Keith made up of tons of swatches of blah fabric. He was inspired by a soggy magazine on the ground, which should have been a clue that it was going to turn out looking like garbage.

But did Fashion Forward have good instincts and agree with the judges? Apparently not. The loser of the night was Emily who made a dress that looked exactly like a number I had for my barbie in the 80's. It was bad, but not as bad as Keith's.

And the winner? Cute retro Kenley who also made an 80's style turquoise and purple number with interesting structured shoulders and a poof on the side that guest host Sandra Bernhart described as a cover for a goiter. It was interesting, definitely high fashion, but not nearly as beautiful as Leanne's.

And I can't believe Stella didn't make it into the bottom three with her lace-up the side black leather pants and a silver lace up vest-top. I've seen pretty much the same outfit on the streets of the Tenderloin. Not really runway material.

Hopefully next week will bring a more exciting challenge and a drop to the bottom three for Stella and Blayne. Stay tuned for next week's recap.

FF just spent on spectacular day on Piedmont Ave. in Oakland. While, it may not have the Cache of College Ave. Piedmont Ave is catching up. With the opening of Polish day spa and and McMullen boutique.

And, then there is McMullen. This boutique has really set the standard for fantastic service. It may be difficult to find another shop that can compare. On walking in, owner Sherri McMullen was warm and gracious and, she really knows her stuff! She was able to create not one or two, but six fantastic outfits that were all tailored to my size/colorings and appropriate for the event I needed to find an outfit for. You walk out of there feeling special. And for this FF blogger, the knowledge that I will feel pretty spectacular (and darn confident) wearing what I purchased there, will lead me to go back again and again. It is really rare to find that level of not just customer service but talent and knowledge as well.

Film Noir?

It seems that every fall brings familiar things: cooler nights, cozy sweaters, apple cider, homemade pies, and thoughts of sitting fireside with a good book or strolling through the crisp fall air. And in the world of fashion we can rest assured that the fall season brings darker colors, staple pieces like blazers and trousers, and, more often than not, tweeds and plaids. This fall all our favorite fall fabrics have taken on structured shapes and the runways were full of film noir influences. Sexy pencil skirts and classic cardigans and silky blouses were seen at many of the '08 previews, like at the YSL show. Even MK's Elizabeth and James line had film noir influences.

But how do you interpret these influences for everyday wear? A recent spread in Bust magazine hit it right on with their more 'modern' take on film noir. Their inspiration? The girls of Twin Peaks. Who can forget the way that Audrey Horn wore plaid pencil skirts and cozy cashmere sweaters? The attire for any of the girls on the show looked effortless and gorgeous!

And it's easy enough to incorporate these looks into your closet. A basic pencil skirt goes a long way and can be worn with cropped cardi's or a blazer and a comfy button-up blouse.

Sex Kitten Hair

Slightly messy, tousled, bed-head hair has been seen all over the runways. In particular the Fall '08 Dior show, where 60's bouffant style hair a-la Bridget Bardot was the new big look.

While the runway bouffants may be a bit over the top for the everyday, it's easy to re-create a more low key version of tousled sex-kitten hair at home. Just use a comb, a trusty hairdryer, and BigSexyHair's What a tease 'Backcomb in a Bottle' product.

Simply blow dry hair part way, section off the back part of your hair (where you want the extra volume) starting at the crown, lift hair and add product to the underneath. Tease and scrunch up hair, or flip head over and finish blow drying the underneath part of your hair. Flip back up and comb hair over so that it looks a bit more smooth. This product really does add volume so you don't need to add too much!

Distressed Denim. To wear or not to wear?

So, we have seen a lot of return to denim styles of the past from skinnies to high-waisted wide-legs. But one thing we never really counted on seeing tied in with premium denim designs has now become the latest trend. In a call back to 90's grunge, you can now buy distressed or "dirty" premium denim in your favorite high end stores. ( Even Barney's is carrying them!) Can this really be a trend that will take off? Would you pay a large sum of money for jeans that will perpetually look unwashed and that have large tears and holes in them?

Project Runway Season 5: Episode 1

I'll admit it. Until last night I was a Project Runway virgin. Not that I wanted to be, mind you, but until recently I never had cable, or a friend who had cable who was willing to have me hang out on her couch every Wednesday evening. But with my new Bravo access comes a new regular feature on Fashion Forward - a Project Runway weekly recap.

In the first episode of the 5th season the 16 new contestants had to create fashions from whatever they could find for $75 at a grocery store. Awesome. What would you make? I knew a chic who went to prom in a dress made of saran wrap. But no one on the show utilized the multi-use kitchen staple. In fact, almost everyone used tablecloths, which I, and the judges, thought was quite lame.

With all of the materials they could have used! But some used interesting finds, such as beach balls and lawnchairs. The highlight for me was a dress made entirely of ironed blue plastic cups and a yellow creation that included flyswatter accents.

The cast members to look out for this season for sheer ridiculousness are definitely Blayne - the flamboyant tan valley boy from Seattle who named his dress Girliscious - and Stella - the forty-something rocker chic with an attitude. Both ended up in the bottom three.

The cast members to expect at the top are Kelly and Korto who were in the top two of the night's challenge. Katoo made a beautiful flowy yellow dress from tablecloths with a kale and tomato neckpiece.

Kelly made a cute little dress from splatter-dyed vacuum bags with a gold thumb tac bodice and hooks made from a spiral notebook. She ended up being the night's winner.

And the loser? Of course the cockiest contestant of the night - Jerry. A thirty-something designer who acted too good for the show until he ended up with a shower curtain monstrosity that looked like something from American Psycho. I don't think anyone was sad to see him go.

So far there hasn't been too much drama or couture, but the show has just begun, my friends. And Heidi looked fabulous, as always. Stay tuned as the show heats up for more recaps.

The High Waist

On a Monday morning, forget fussy dressing! A simple way to pull off a sophisticated look is to style a great pair of trousers with a vest. To make it modern and edgy, make those trousers high waist jeans-and top it off with a fitted waistcoat. FF suggests 18th Amendment's Bacal high waisted jean in 'Raw' wash, and Rag and Bone's fitted 'Casino' waistcoat in grey. When it comes to choosing a top to wear with, keep it basic. A plain black or white tee or tank works best. And, to make the most of your legs throw on shoes with (at least a bit of) a heel.
